This week’s font is a great display font that would be perfect for title work on your pages and projects. Deming is a fun font designed by Mike Fortress. You can find this wonderful font over on Lost-Type which is a pay what you want type of site (for personal use, commercial use has to pay a certain amount on certain fonts). Deming is an all capital font that includes numbers and punctuation.

Lost-Type was created by Tyler Galpin and Riley Cran. It was founded with the intention of providing unique and quality fonts based on a pay-what-you-want model. The best part is all font designers get 100% of the donations their font receives. So if you just want to try out the font and would like to snag it for free, just put a zero (0) in the box. If you would like to give a little to the font designer then fill in whatever amount you would like in the box.

In this week’s edition of Fontology I am bringing you a fun font with a quirky name, Mayonaise. Mayonaise is one the fonts used in created the chalkboard journal card free from the previous Fontology post HERE.

Now whether you like mayonnaise the condiment or not I know you will love Mayonaise the font. This font was created by Marina Nunes and is available FREE at Dafont.com. With its unique hand lettered look it will be a great font for titles, filling in those blank word strips or creating your own word art. Mayonaise is an all capital font with numbers 0-9. This font does NOT include lowercase and punctuation.

As digital scrapbookers we all know how precious our photographs and digital supplies are. If you have been doing this for any amount of time either you or someone you know has the horrible experience of a computer crash or hard drive failure that resulted in TFL (Total File Loss). We love our computers but sometimes life happens. There are many ways you can have a major issue and lose your files from theft of your computer to hard drive failure. Today’s tip is about backing up your files and the options you have to safeguard all your precious memories in case this happens to you.

It is very important to have a back up procedure in place for your files. It doesn’t matter which method you choose to back up as long as you are routinely backing up your files. I can’t tell you the number of times I have witnessed or heard someone suffer from TFL. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can pay a crazy amount of money to get some of your files recovered. A lot of times though, the files are lost forever. To make sure this doesn’t happen to you read on to learn more about the different ways you can protect yourself from TFL.  Whatever back up plan works best for you just remember to ALWAYS back up your files and keep a good system in case the dreadful TFL happens to you!

1.  Second Hard Drive

If you are a desktop user you can create a second hard drive on your machine. Once the second drive is installed then you can save the files you want to safe keep onto both drives.

2. External Hard Drives

External Hard Drives or EHDs are a common piece of equipment among scrapbookers. EHD’s are inexpensive and are a great way to back up your files. There are many brands and options to choose from and they can run right off of your USB port.

3. DVD/CD-ROM

This may be a little more time consuming but we can always back up files the trusty old way of the good old DVD/CD-ROM (type depends on what you are backing up). If you choose this method make sure to keep the discs in a secure location

4. Second Computer

If you own more than one computer you can back up your files to your second computer.

5. Offsite/Online Backup

Backing up via an online service is becoming more popular with scrapbookers. Using this kind of service helps you to back up off site and automatically with easy restoration in case of TFL. There are several providers like Mozy, BackBlaze and Carbonite that each offer great plans. Just remember that if you use an EHD in addition to your computer the online backup service you choose also backs up EHDs.

As a designer I not only have my priceless photos and digital products but I also have my design work that I would hate to lose. For my own personal backup plan I use a Western Digital EHD AND backup online via BackBlaze. I like to have two backups which makes me feel better. Online backup methods are great since they automatically backup for you which is a huge plus in my book.

This week’s Fontology brings you another awesome FREE font plus a FREE journal card made by me. First lets talk about this wonderful font by BittBox, Petie boy…

Petie Boy, named after his childhood horse, was first released by Jay Hilgert in 2008. This amazing font comes in four weights: light, medium, heavy, and destroyed. The destroyed weight is the only weight in the bunch that does NOT have punctuation. Petie Boy is a fun font that I think makes a great *chalkboard font*. With the love of chalk in design and digital scrapbooking lately I think it would make the perfect addition to your font stash. This all uppercase font has that handlettering look that goes well with a lot of the chalkboard designs. Want to add Petie Boy to your font collection? I am happy to start with the Fontology series again. After a bit of a hiatus it is time to get the blog back in action! What better way to kick of the return of blog action then with an amazing font?!

As with most in the design or scrapbooking hobby I am a HUGE font addict! I have always had a big love for typography and am always on the lookout for awesome fonts to add to my line up. With the Fontology series I share some of those font finds so we can all have fun in this crazy addiction to fonts. Some of the fonts I share will be free and some will be for a charge. I will always list where I snagged the font from and whether it is free or what it costs. I know for hobbyist free is always a better choice so I will try my best to share the coolest FREE fonts but as a designer I also have a great stash of fonts that I purchase and some are just too cool not to share even though they may cost more than what you would want to spend.

If you have any font questions or would like a certain type of font spotlighted (typewriter, serif, sans serif, etc.) don’t hesitate to let me know and I will do my best to answer all questions and spotlight the different types of fonts.

Now on to today’s spotlighted font…

Villa Didot is a wonderful, fun font. This font is very versatile and can sport many looks with the different parts of this amazing font. You can combine the different outlines and fills to create a different look each time. The brain child of Sasha Timplan, Villa Didot, was created to use on posters for club villaWuller. The best part of this wonderful font? You can snag it FREE by visiting Artill’s blog HERE. This font would be a great addition to your stash to help create amazing, fun titles on your pages and projects.
